Nutec is the tradename of a fiber cement board made by Everite, a South African Company. It is made by mixing man-made fibers into Portland cement. It comes in a variety of sizes and thickness to suite different use cases.
Nutec is not the only fiber cement board on the market, there is a fiber cement board to fit any budget. However, due to its popularity, Nutec has become the term used to refer to all such products. All Nutec boards are fiber cement, but not all fiber cement boards are Nutec. The advantage of using the genuine product is that it comes with a manufacturers guarantee. The down side is it might be out of your budget. This is something we would discuss with you at the planning stage, how we can maximize your budget to get the best Nutec Wendy house possible.
We use two types of board, long strips that mimic traditional planking, used in an overlapping pattern, and flat boards.
Nutec and fiber cement boards in general are the ideal material to cope with Cape Town’s harsh environment and climate- strong sun, high winds with a fair amount of sand being blown around, hard winter storms bringing lots of rain and hail.
To cope with this, fiber cement boards are:
It is an investment though, high quality boards can really push the price up when compared to wooden wendy houses. However, if you are looking for a long lasting structure that needs to perform perfectly for years to come, we recommend using Nutec.
Nutec is only a cladding. The actual structure of the building is a timber frame built onto either a permanent concrete slab or a non-permanent wooden pallet floor. All the strength and rigidity comes from this frame. As good as Nutec is at keeping the elements out it should not be used to add any structural strength or rigidity to the finished building.
To ensure that the Nutec Wendy house will last for many years we only use specially treated timber as specified by SABS requirements. And this timber is used to construct frames that also comply to SABS and local building regulations. There are laws and guidelines that govern everything such as timber spacing, timber dimensions, and fastenings.
Some companies cut corners in this area. They use thinner, untreated timber, that is spaced too far apart. They then hide this framework under the outer cladding and an inner lining. The result is a Wendy house that will not last long and be incredibly unstable and dangerous. Always have the frame inspected before it is covered over.
Flat
Flat rooves are not really flat, more ‘sloped’. The roof usually slopes across the width of the structure, though this can depend on the position of the wendy house. This form of roof is generally cheaper because it doesn’t need a special frame, it is formed just by making the front of the building slightly higher and laying beams onto the wall tops. Great if you want to keep the price down and or have a lower profile structure.
Pitched
An a-frame is put on top of the wall frames creating a roof that slopes from the center to either side- almost exclusively across the width of the structure. This type of roof is more expensive because of the specially constructed frames, however, it looks better, is better at water run off, and creates more space in the interior. It definetly tends to make the wendy house look more like a proper house.
Wooden
Wooden window frames and doors are made from hard woods to SABS standards. They are sturdy and long lasting, but require maintenance. They are cheaper and fit with aesthetics of a wooden wendy house well, however, can look out of place on a Nutec building. Wooden frames require glazing.
Aluminium
Aluminium window frames and doors are made using extruded aluminium. They are sealed units using thicker glass than wooden frames, making them better insulated from elements and noise. However, they are somewhat pricier, and don’t always fit with wooden wendy house aesthetics. Aluminium frames come pre fitted with glass. Double glazed units can be fitted.
Wooden Pallet
A wooden sub-frame is created which is then laid over with plywood panels. This creates a sandwich construction that is fairly strong and rigid, but not permanent. This floor is then supported on bricks to lift it off the ground and level it out, and the timber frame is built on top. The resulting structure is not deemed permanent, lowering the requirements for planning permission, however, there is always some flex and bounce in the finished building. This is a low cost foundation.
Concrete Slab
An engineered, reinforced concrete slab is laid directly onto the ground. The thickness is as per SABS requirements, as well as topographic requirements. This slab can either be done in a wooden frame, which is then removed, or brick/block walls can form its perimeter. The resulting structure is solid and rigid, however this is deemed a permanent structure, requiring the same planning permissions as any other building of this type. The costs are higher than a pallet floor.
